The Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) has received the long-awaited Global Positioning System (GPS) and Public Information System (PIS) devices, which will be installed in buses running on local routes and queue shelters in the city. CTU says the devices will be operational within a month.

“The devices were received this week from IBuilt Technologies Limited, a Delhi-based company, which has been awarded the project. The work to set up a control room at the CTU building has already been initiated. The system is expected to operate within a month or so,” CTU Director M L Sharma said.

Out of the total 116 semi-low floor buses running on local routes in the city, GPS devices would be installed on 100 buses in the grid system. The PIS, on the other hand, would be installed at 50 queue shelters and provide visual and audio information about the location of the buses.

Forty-four bus queue shelters, three each at ISBT-17 and ISBT-43, have been already identified for installation of the system.

The Centre for Computational Engineering, Punjab Engineering College, is, meanwhile, finalising the specifications, terms and conditions for the GSM services.
