IndiGo flies ahead of Air India in January

Cementing its position in the top three,IndiGo airlines flew ahead of Air India by carrying 1.71 lakh more domestic passengers than the national carrier in January this year. IndiGo also recorded the highest occupancy level in domestic skies at 88.6 per cent last month.

According to figures released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the month of January,domestic traffic marginally dipped by 5 per cent compared to December. However,the numbers posted this week were significantly higher by 21 per cent than those recorded in January 2010. Over 49.36 lakh passengers were carried by all domestic airlines last month against 40.88 lakh in January 2010.

Naresh Goyals Jet Airways and its subsidiary JetLite together carried around one-fourth of the total passengers last month. Jet and JetLite together flew 12.26 lakh passengers last month,followed by Kingfisher,which carried 9.61 lakh and IndiGo with 9.5 lakh. Air India (Domestic) flew 7.79 lakh flyers,SpiceJet 7.05 lakh and GoAir 3.15 lakh.

The data showed the no-frill airline IndiGo narrowing the gap with Kingfisher. While Kingfisher captured 19.5 per cent,IndiGo had 19.2 per cent. Air India (Domestic) was in the fourth place with 15.8 per cent,followed by another low-cost carrier SpiceJet with 14.3 per cent.

IndiGos highest occupancy levels in January were followed by Kingfisher with 86.5,GoAir with 83.3 and SpiceJet with 82.6 per cent,the figures showed. Jet Airways and Air India (Domestic) recorded 73.9 and 69.3 respectively. Jet Airways recorded the highest on-time performance (OTP) at 88.8 per cent. It was followed by Kingfisher Airlines at 87.9 per cent,Jet Lite at 83.7 per cent,Go Air at 80 per cent,IndiGo at 80 per cent,while Spice Jet and Air India (Domestic) lagged behind at 75 per cent and 67.9 per cent respectively.

Spice Jet recorded the highest number of delayed flights at 17,480,while Jet Airways and Jet Lite together cancelled the maximum number of flights at over 5,500. Airlines had to shell out over Rs 52 lakh as compensation to passengers affected by cancellations and delay.
