The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Monday that India has been committed to the goal of creating a world free of nuclear weapons since it gained independence from Britain in 1947.

Addressing the Council On Foreign Relations in Washington, Dr. Singh said: “In my interactions with President Obama, I have found shared thinking on the moral imperative of putting the poor at the forefront of the global agenda. In Africa, Asia and elsewhere, they must have access to education that gives them bankable skills, to nutrition and to health-care.”

“The India-US partnership can promote global cooperation in dealing with issues that the world has to face together, whether it is hunger, global security and terrorism, nuclear disarmament, climate change or the spread of pandemics,” he added.

Welcoming President Obama’s commitment to the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons, he said: “India has been committed to this goal since independence. We believe that India’s security will be enhanced, not diminished, by the complete elimination of nuclear weapons the world over.”

“There is much that India and the United States can do together to reduce the global risks of nuclear proliferation, including by building a new global consensus on the way ahead," Dr. Singh said.

The negotiation of a verifiable Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty in the Conference on Disarmament will be a significant contribution,” he said.

“We welcome President Obama’s initiative to host a Summit on Nuclear Security in April next year. Our countries can play a vital role in strengthening global resolve to prevent terrorists from gaining access to materials and technologies related to weapons of mass destruction,” the Prime Minister added.

Elimination of Nuclear weapons requiredBy: Vijay | 25-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward It's good that Shri.Manmohan Singh reiterated India's stand on nuclear weapons. Let the number of worldwide nuclear weapons be reduced from dozens of thousands to few tens.
Nuclear free-- Are you kiddingBy: salim | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward All the power that got nuclear weapon are now forcing others not to have nuclear power so they can bully others who do not have it. What a JOKE
Half RightBy: Rodgers Father | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The terrorist state next door does not believe in nuclear weapon free state. Where does that leave India which in the past has totaly shown constraint?
nuclear weapons freeBy: Joseph Michael | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The talk of Nuclear weapons free world by any country having them is a sham. And for neighbours, the East India Company used the fighting neighbours in India to grab the entire country. Do not forget the lessons of history.
PM should ask US to eliminate nuclear weapons, fix carbon emissions,.. before committingBy: asha | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The PM seems to be on a mission to say and do what ever will please the Americans - economy, US dollar, nuclear, climate,.. . The Americans are Pakistan's ally and China's debtor. India has no leverage with them and so the PM should not promise them the moon at India's expense.
Rest of the world does not understand peace, Manmohan should stop being naiveBy: Indian | 24-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The only solution for survival of Hindus in the face of nuclear weapons with Pakistan(Muslim), US and Europe(Christian) and China(Communist) is to have four of them for every one they have, and ability to deliver them through multiple means. The Hindu tolerance of India is all well and good, but no one can trust ideologies of these other three which is based on deception and annihiliation of others. In the interest of global peace, India, the homeland of tolerance in the form of Hindus Sikhs Buddhists and other Eastern dharmas, has the moral obligation to be able to carpet bomb the other three evil sects many times over, because evil does not understand good, and will only be stopped, contained and rolled back by deterrence.
