Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani is once again the wealthiest person in India. The net worth of the promoter of the largest listed Indian company is put at $32 billion, an increase of 54 per cent from nearly $21 billion last year, according to a Forbes report.

“Trailing behind him are Lakshmi Mittal (Arcelor Mittal) with a net worth of $30 billion, up 46 per cent from $20.5 billion, and Mukesh’s estranged brother, Anil Ambani, whose net worth of $17.5 billion, 40 per cent, higher than before, put him in third place,” it said. A rebounding stock market that gained two-thirds in the past year and an economy growing at 6 per cent have boosted the net worth of India's richest people. The combined net worth of India’s 100 richest people is $276 billion, almost a quarter of the country’s GDP.

“Last year, there were only 27 billionaires on the India Rich List. This year, the number has almost doubled to 52 — just two short of what India had at the peak of the stock market boom in 2007,” according to the Forbes report.

Though the top 10 positions remain largely unchanged, there are some shifts in fortunes across the list. Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Airtel, has moved down from Number 4 to Number 8 and Wipro chairman Azim Premji has moved up to Number 4 position. “The Ruia brothers (Essar group) with a net worth of $13.6 billion have made it to number 5 this year. Adi Godrej has moved out of the top 10 to the number 12 position. Savitri Jindal, nonexecutive chairwoman of O P Jindal Group, at a net worth of $12 billion this year has made it to number 7 on the list — she is one of only six women on the list,” the Forbes report said.

India’s billionaire list doublesBy: Ratan Gupta | 21-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward And the list of poor also multiplied. Today, our great nation has 700 million people living below poverty line and it is increasing. That is a landmark in the history of mankind. Between 100 to 500 thousand Indians today owns 90% of India, and we are proud of it. We are about to create the greatest modern slavery the world has seen. Rivers, mountains and jungles have also privatised. I am not a socialist or communist. But there is a way to develop the nation. American brutal capitalism will look picnic when compare to ours.
Too many of usBy: Dogra | 21-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward You are obviously not a capitalist. By your own admission you are not a socialist or communist. So what are you and how do you propose India should develop? Surely you do not propose going back to the days of licence raj!! We had to mortgage our gold reserves with the Bank of England to get a handout. Our nation's wealth is so THINLY SPREAD because there are too many of us. If our population had stabilised at 800 million (twice as much as at the time of independence) then we would all be above the poverty line. Instead there are 1,200 million of us and increasing at an alarming rate. I am not a movie buff, but I remember the %u2018sad but true%u2019 line of Amitabh Bachchan in Anand (I think) %u201CEk abhi mara nahin, aur doosra marne ke liye paida ho gaya%u201D.
GoodBy: yohan | 21-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward The increase in billionaires is good. people are making good business and they become billionaires. on the other side, the plight of common man is still not improving. the poverty is still same or increasing. our fiscal management should be in such a way that we should try to bring the poverty to a zero level and middle class citizens should be able to get commodities at affordable prices. todays market can be afforded only by billionaires with prices of commodities each day going up. if the common man is not benefited, what sort of financial management is Dr Singh and UPA talking about. is this govt to serve the billionaires only. even in parliament, the number of crorepathi MPs are going up. now it is 300. by next term, the parliament will be 100% crorepathi and then all laws will be enacted for crorepathis. poor man will remain poor for ever and ever.
