Inspector sacked for beating up Dalit woman

“The government has terminated the services of Inspector Kailashnath Dwivedi,who had thrashed a woman in Sultanpur district’s Musafikhana police station,” Principal Secretary (Home) Kunwar Fateh Bahadur told mediapersons on Thursday.

After the police brutality came to light,Dwiwedi was suspended by the Sultanpur SP and an inquiry ordered,he added.

Singh said keeping in mind the gravity of the incident,the Mayawati government decided to terminate the police officer’s services with immediate effect. Footage of the woman being slapped,pushed and pulled by the hair were aired by TV channels. Even as the woman was being beaten,a woman constable stood by as a mute spectator.

He said the inspector had also slapped Sangeeta during a press briefing.

The police had been looking for Sangeeta after her husband Deepak Kumar’s mother lodged an FIR following his strangulation. The woman was caught after some time and she confessed to the crime,Sultanpur SP Satyendra Veer Singh said.

The National Commission for Women has sought a report in the matter from the state government and the police.
