Delhi journalist Syed Mohammed Ahmad Kazmi, arrested for his alleged role in the February 13 bomb attack on an Israeli diplomat, and the Iranian suspects first conducted a reconnaissance of the area around the Israeli embassy in May 2011,a police source claimed on Friday.

A second reconnaissance was conducted in January-February and the focus was on vehicles with “blue number plates of a particular series,” the source claimed, adding that an Iranian SIM card had been recovered from Kazmi’s house.

The source said CCTV footage of the area around the embassy shows Kazmi on a Scooty with Houshang Afshar Irani, one of the three Iranian suspects wanted by police. This Scooty was recovered from Kazmi’s house after his arrest on March 6.

Police Commissioner B K Gupta said: “Kazmi has been arrested as a facilitator and for being part of the conspiracy. He recced the area around the Israeli Embassy along with Irani. The matter of targeting Israeli diplomats through explosive devices was also discussed. Kazmi also provided his Maruti Alto car to the two other Iranian suspects for a recce. They were specifically interested in vehicles and routes used by Israeli diplomats.”

Another police source said Irani purchased the Scooty from a person in Karol Bagh in April 2011 and handed over a photocopy of his passport details. Irani visited Delhi twice after the conspiracy was hatched in January 2011.

Police said it appeared that money was used to lure Kazmi. Bank account details of Kazmi and his wife show that they received more than Rs 21 lakh in foreign remittance in recent months.

Police said that three days after the blast, they were sure about Irani’s involvement since he was found to be in touch with Sedaghatzadeh Masoud, member of the Bangkok terror module who was arrested from Kuala Lumpur on February 15. During an analysis of Irani’s phone details,Kazmi’s number showed up and this is how police zeroed-in on him.
