  • With the Malegaon blast forming the backdrop, the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind has approached the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Government to make public the report of Justice K N Patil Commission, set up after the Malegaon riots of 2001.

After the October 26, 2001 riots, Justice Patil, a retired judge of the Bombay High Court, was asked to inquire into sequence of events leading to the riots, their immediate causes, besides finding which organisation and individuals were responsible.

Jamiat president Maulana Arshad Madani in his petition has claimed that despite the report being submitted to the Government long back, it was never placed before the Cabinet. Alleging it was deliberately withheld, the petition urged the court to issue directions to the Cabinet Secretary and Home Secretary, who have been named as respondents besides others, to make the report public and take necessary action.

Claiming that Muslims in India are being made soft targets after every terrorist strike, Madani in his petition has urged that the CBI be ordered to expedite the probe into the 2006 Malegaon blasts, too.

The petition also accuses police officials, especially from Maharashtra and Gujarat, who allegedly pick up Muslim young men and brand them as terrorists or masterminds of terror strikes or any such attacks carried anywhere in the country. It has cited the case of Andhra Pradesh where Muslims were detained and tortured but later found to be innocent and released.

The petition filed through advocate Anis Suhrawardy has also sought a judicial inquiry into the 2006 Nanded blasts.
