Kachroo case in High Court as convict challenges order

The Himachal Pradesh High Court admitted an appeal against the conviction of four MBBS students of Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court on Wednesday admitted an appeal against the conviction of four MBBS students of Dr Rajendra Prasad Medical College,Tanda (Kangra),in the Aman Kachroo ragging death case.

On November 11,Additional Sessions Judge,Dharamsala,Purinder Vaidya convicted all four accused under Section 304 (2) of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and sentenced them to four years’ rigorous imprisonment,also imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on each of them.

While the state government has taken a decision to file an appeal seeking enhancement of the sentence,Naveen Verma,one of the convicts,approached the High Court seeking quashing of the judgment. In his petition filed through senior advocate Anoop Chitkara,Naveen alleged that the trial court had committed a serious error in awarding convictions,which were largely influenced by media reports.

Admitting the appeal,Justice Surinder Singh Thakur issued notices to the state government.

Aman Kachroo,19,a first year MBBS student at the college,was subjected to assault by his seniors Ajay Verma,Naveen Verma,Abhinav Verma and Mukul Sharma on the pretext of ragging on the intervening night of March 6 and 7,2009.

He died on March 8,after lodging a complaint with the college authorities.
