Karat wants to use legal option against Maoists

Making a departure from his stand,the CPM general secretary,Prakash Karat,urged Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee to use legal options for tackling the Maiosts in West Bengal.

Addressing a gathering of party members on Friday,he said,The CM will have to tackle the problem according to the law. Karat,who is in the city to address a party meeting to celebrate the birth centenary of Left stalwart E M S Namboodiripad,hinted that he has no objections against using the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Activities Act,under which Bhattacharjee has already taken action against Maoist cadres. Earlier,he had said the Marxists should fight the Maoists politically.

Earlier,when Bhattacharjee had accepted the Central proposal for banning the Maoist outfit with the imposition of UAPA,a section of Left leaders had criticised him. Karat,however,said: It (Maoists) is a degenerated form of ultra-Left politics. They identify themselves with the LTTE and Jihadi groups in Pakistan.

He also tried to encourage the demoralised Bengal cadres after its defeat in the Lok Sabha polls.

Electoral reverses happen. True,we lost the polls,but we have to rectify our mistakes, said Karat. We have reviewed the results and will go to the people to admit our mistakes, he added. We are confident that we will be able to eliminate the wrong trends in the party, said Karat,who will attend the crucial state committee meeting to be held on Saturday. Fridays meeting was attended by senior CPM leaders,including Bhattacharjee and Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta.
