Kashmiris protest ‘repression’

Bashir and Munshi were among hundreds of Kashmiris who gathered to protest against the “repression and killings by the armed forces” in Kashmir,and held a night-long protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday,demanding a “political solution to the issue rather than a military one”.

“I was in Kashmir for the last six weeks. The armed forces have made the life miserable for people,” said Munshi.

The photos of the victims of the recent violence were affixed on walls along with placards that read “Stop Human Rights Violations in Kashmir”.

Delhi University professor S A R Geelani said,“We feel the pain of Kashmiris back home. The idea behind holding this protest in evening was that in Kashmir curfew is imposed during the day and movement is allowed only in evening.”

Taking note of protest by youths,filmmaker Sanjay Kak said,“The Kashmir discourse is changing.”

Gowhar,a student,said,“I have seen my brothers being killed in front of my eyes. Kashmiris don’t have any freedom,no freedom of expression.”

Many Hindus and Sikhs also participated in the protest. Amarpal Singh said,“We came from Amritsar to express solidarity with Kashmiris. We condemn armed forces in Kashmir.”
