Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Wednesday briefed Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani about the ongoing operations against militants in the restive northwestern tribal region. During the meeting at the Prime Minister's house this morning, the two also discussed matters related to national security.

The military says it is winding down the operations against the Taliban in Swat and other areas of Malakand division in the North West Frontier Province. The army claims nearly 1,600 militants have been killed in the operations. However, the figure cannot be independently confirmed as journalists are barred from entering the conflict zone. Analysts have also expressed concern as most of the top

Taliban commanders in Swat and nearby areas have been captured or killed. Over 130 soldiers have also died in the fighting. Gilani said Pakistan is proud of the armed forces, particularly the personnel who "laid their lives for the national cause". Kayani also briefed the premier about his recent visits to France, Germany and Russia.
