Lawyers’ body meets CJI,opposes elevation of Dinakaran

A delegation led by eminent jurist Fali S Nariman and Supreme Court Bar Association president Krishnamani on Wednesday met Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan and appealed to him not to elevate Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran to the apex court.

It also submitted to the CJI the resolution passed by Bar Association of India in which it had pleaded that in the light of the controversy regarding Justice Dinakaran,the Supreme Court Collegium should not go ahead with his elevation.

The BAI had on November 28 adopted a resolution urging the SC Collegium to desist from elevating Justice Dinakaran to the apex court to “save the credibility of the judiciary”.

The resolution said that appointment of such a person whose integrity was “widely perceived to be doubtful” would affect the faith of common man in the judicial institution.

“The Bar Association of India (BAI) most fervently and and seriously appeals to the Collegium of the Supreme Court not to proceed further with his (Dinakaran) recommendation for the appointment to the apex court and save the credibility of judiciary in the eyes of the people,” the resolution had said.

It had read,”We therefore,request the Collegium to put an end to the controversy immediately by a simple announcement that the recommendation already made will not be followed any further.”
