LeT men get jail term

The Lucknow District Judge awarded life imprisonment to a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative and sentenced another to 14-years of imprisonment on Monday.

The Lucknow District Judge awarded life imprisonment to a Lashkar-e-Toiba operative and sentenced another to 14-years of imprisonment on Monday.

On May 12,2004,the state STF arrested two alleged LeT militants — Mohammad Atharuddin and Mohammad Irfan — from Chinhat area in Lucknow while they were about to board the Lucknow-Faizabad bus. The police recovered an AK-56,five kgs of ammonium nitrate,two detonators,a map of Lucknow,passport,railway map and other items from their possession. 

They were sentenced under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) and various sections of the IPC.

District Judge Shivanand Mishra imposed a fine of Rs 8.2 lakh on Atharuddin and Rs 4.7 lakh on Mohammad Irfan.

“We have not yet decided whether to file an appeal in the High Court,” said Javed Murtaza,Defence lawyer.

The police claimed that Mohammad Irfan,a resident of Lucknow,was staying with Atharuddin.
