Left too targets PM,says he tried to justify 2G scam

CPI leader D Raja also criticised Manmohan Singh for not explaining the alleged loot by the corporate houses in the spectrum allocation.

The Left parties on Wednesday slammed the Prime Ministers clarifications on allegations of corruption against the government, with CPM leader Sitaram Yechury saying that he virtually tried to justify the alleged 2G spectrum scam by comparing it with the food and fertilizer subsidies.

CPI leader D Raja also criticised Manmohan Singh for not explaining the alleged loot by the corporate houses in the spectrum allocation. He (Prime Minister) has actually admitted to the fact that his government has been subsidising the corporate sector by giving away national assets like the spectrum in throwaway prices. The fact remains that the government did not collect what was due (in 2G spectrum allocation),which was also a loss, Yechury said.

He criticised Singh for comparing the presumptive loss in the allocation of 2G spectrum with the food and fertiliser subsidies.

Raja sought to know whether the PM considered the subsidies as a loss to the exchequer, saying he only tried to explain the scam. He should explain how corporate houses made such huge profits. It was virtually a loot. The PM did not answer that question. That is totally strange and that too from a PM who is himself an economist.

CPM politburo member Brinda Karat too accused the PM of trying to justify the 2G scam. He defended the policies and the procedures (of 2G spectrum allocation) and even the immediate sale of equity of two firms through huge amounts. He actually defended it saying this was just a way of raising funds from the market.
