Left walks out,Singur bill passed

The West Bengal Assembly witnessed history as it passed the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill,2011.

The West Bengal Assembly witnessed history on Tuesday as it passed the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill,2011,that enables the government to take possession of 997 acres of land in Singur leased to Tata Motors and its ancillary units by the previous Left Front government for building a small car manufacturing unit.

Addressing the House during the debate on the Bill,Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said all unwilling farmers of Singur will get back their land. It was our commitment before the elections that unwilling farmers will get land if we come to power. I appeal to all that nobody should go into the technicalities of the Bill but help us achieve our goal. We are doing it fast because every moment is important. West Bengal is lagging behind many states and we must work fast to take the state out of morass it is in.

The Bill was passed by a voice vote after the opposition Left Front staged a walkout, protesting against the haste in which the Bill was passed. We are not opposed to the intent but the undue haste in which it was passed because we believe if challenged in law courts,it will be declared ultra-vires and that will not serve the purpose of the farmers, Surya Kanta Mishra,Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, said.

During the debate, former minister for land and land reforms Abdur Rezaq Mollah congratulated Mamata for the bill but also warned that if she did a hasty job,she would be in trouble.

Minister for Commerce and Industries Partha Chatterjee countered that the Bill was prepared in accordance with provisions of the law.

The Bill will now go to the Governor who will seek the law departments advice on whether it will go to the President for her consent.
