In its first legal intervention in the Bhopal gas tragedy case, the Madhya Pradesh government on Wednesday formed a five-member committee of legal experts to study various aspects of the lower courts judgment.

The committee has been asked to file an interim report within 10 days and the final report in a month with recommendations on filing an appeal against the verdict.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that even though it is the CBI which should file an appeal, his government had decided to intervene due to the inadequate sentence meted out to the guilty. I was shocked and concerned over the verdict, the CM said.

The committee members are Additional Solicitor General Vivek Tankha, state Advocate General R D Jain, senior advocate Shantilal Lodha, former advocate general Anand Mohan Mathur and Principal Secretary (Law) A K Mishra.

Chouhan said that under Section 71 of the CrPC,a separate case for every death could be filed under Section 304-A. This would enhance the quantum of punishment beyond life imprisonment.
