  • Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has said that she will meet Congress president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Tuesday to thrash out the Singur issue.

Announcing this at her Kalighat home on Monday afternoon, Banerjee said: “We believe this government has no right to remain in power because it flouted the agreement signed in front of the Governor. We have taken up the matter with the Governor and will take it up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil. But since the PM is abroad and will take around five days to come back, I will meet Sonia Gandhi and demand Central intervention.”

But speculations are rife on the real purpose of the meeting. In the face of the coming Lok Sabha polls, Gandhi is reportedly keen to have an alliance with TMC. According to TMC insiders, she had even called on Banerjee a few times.

According to TMC sources, Banerjee herself is in favour of an understanding with the Congress, as one of the reasons for her party’s doing well in the last panchayat elections was its distance from the BJP.

That Singur alone is not on agenda was hinted at by the party’s former parliamentarian Dinesh Trivedi, who is going to accompany the Trinamool leader to 10, Janpath. “When two political leaders meet, so many issues can crop up. Who knows whether other issues will not come up or not. Let us see,” Trivedi told The Indian Express.
