Mamata to meet Pranab,financial aid on agenda

This is the first time Mamata is going to Delhi after she became Chief Minister.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will leave for Delhi on Saturday,primarily to meet Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to find ways on how to bring the state out of the current financial crisis.

This is the first time Mamata is going to Delhi after she became Chief Minister. She is also likely to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The meeting is a sequel to one with Mukherjee held last month at his Dhakuria residence in Kolkata. That meeting was attended by state Finance Minister Amit Mitra,Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh and Finance Secretary C M Bachawat.

In the Governors address on Tuesday,the financial crisis of the state was presented very clearly. The debt burden has already reached Rs 1,85,660.47 crore on March 31,2011 and is estimated to go up to a staggering Rs 2.03,488 crore during the course of this year…Taking a realistic view of the circumstances,the state is likely to face a cash deficit of as high an amount as Rs 9,000 crore during the current financial year, the Governor said.

Mamata,who maintains almost everyday that that state is in a deep financial crisis,wants a special financial package from the Centre. On Monday,Mitra met Mukherjee in Delhi and talked of the financial package.

Apart from meeting central leaders,Mamata will also attend a function to be organised by the Bengali Association of Delhi to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. She will also attend a function to mark the birth anniversary of poet Nazrul Islam.

Mamata will again go to Delhi on June 30 to meet Planning Commission Deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia to discuss the states annual plan for 2011-2012. The Chief Minister will be accompanied by Finance Minister Amit Mitra,Minister for Planning and Development Manish Gupta and other top officials.
