After visiting Mangalkot in Burdwan district, where a team of Congress MLAs were assaulted allegedly by CPM supporters, the state Human Rights Commission indicated it would make victims of the violence as witnesses in the case.
Sources in the panel said the victims told them that police had fled from the spot when the MLAs were attacked at Dhanyarukhi village on July 15.
Following the furore in the Assembly, the state government had earlier ordered a probe.
Based on the probes preliminary findings, conducted by the deputy inspector general (Burdwan Range),state Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen gave a clean chit to the police personnel who were on duty on July 15.
Commission sources said their visit to the area and the statements of victims point to loopholes in the security cover provided to the MLA team.
On Wednesday, the probe team visited Dhanyarukhi village. The team also spoke to about 20 villagers who were eyewitnesses to the incident and themselves were victims of the violence in the area, which has been continuing over the last month since the murder of Dhanyarukhi-based CPM leader Falguni Mukherjee on June 15.
