Maya seeks Rs 491 cr more for memorials,parks

The Mayawati government will spend as much as Rs 491 crore more on parks and memorials to Dalit icons being constructed in the state capital during the current fiscal 2010-11. The government sought approval for this in the first supplementary demands for grants this year,which were presented in the Assembly on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Lalji Verma tabled the Finance Bill for grants totalling Rs 5,461 crore. In the regular budget,which was presented in the Assembly on February 4 last,the government had made a provision of over Rs 700 crore for statues,parks and memorials in grants of different departments. Earlier,while replying to the debate on the Govenor’s address,Mayawati had assured that there would be no financial allocation for parks and memorials in the 2010-11 budget.

In the supplementary demands,the government has sought over Rs 409 crore for the Kanshiram Green (Eco) Park being constructed on the Jail Road. The government has already spent close to Rs 300 crore on this project. For the Kanshiram Memorial situated adjacent to the eco park,Rs 23.82 crore has been sought for payment to the construction agency as centage charges. Work on this project has been suspended on the order of the Supreme Court since September 2009.

The government has sought another Rs 9.47 crore for the development of the periphery of Dr BR Ambedkar Samajik Parivartan Sthal and Rs 48.22 crore for payment as centage charges for it.

Rs 20 crore has been sought for recouping withdrawal made from the state contingency fund for the creation of a special security force for the protection of the memorials.
