Members of animal welfare group People For Animals (PFA) alleged they were attacked and fired at by a mob late on Friday night for intercepting several trucks full of animals that were being taken for slaughter.
PFA members, along with the police, intercepted several trucks headed for slaughter houses in Ghazipur. There were several buffaloes packed in the trucks. There eyes had been gouged out and their limbs had been broken. They were already half-dead, Saurabh Gupta from PFA said.
Soon after,a mob attacked the team and allegedly also fired at them as they left in a vehicle.
The mob threatened us,saying they would not let anyone harm the butcher trade. When we left in a vehicle,a silver Indica followed us and fired at us, Gupta said.
Provisions under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act set down ways of transporting animals. A police complaint has been filed for violating the PCA Act and for rioting and three persons were arrested.
