After political parties, minority organisations have also raised their voices against the Womens Reservation Bill.
The Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA),an organisation for rights of Muslim women, has said though the UPA has taken a progressive step in introducing the Bill,it needs to be seen who will be benefitted by the legislation.
Naish Hasan of the BMMA said: We are happy that the UPA has taken this issue in its 100-day agenda. But women are
not only facing biases on gender ground, but also on other grounds.
Citing examples of the 59 women MPs elected to the 15th Lok Sabha, the organisation pointed out that except a few,all are either from upper caste or affluent families. Even those who are backwards or Dalits come from political families. Meira Kumar is Jagjivan Rams daughter. In UP,Kaiser Jahan and Tabassum Begum may be backward Muslims, but their husbands are affluent MLAs, said Hasan. BMMA state convener Naaz Raza said the organisation does not support the stance of leaders like Sharad Yadav and Mulayam Singh Yadav. They are politically motivated and welfare of the women does not figure in their agenda. We are demanding that the Bill should be modified before it is approved, said Raza.
