After a seven-year-long fight,Shamima Kausar still feels her battle is only half won. Kausars daughter Ishrat Jahan was killed in 2004 in an alleged fake encounter. My child is a martyr. Her death cannot be forgotten and the killers cannot be forgiven, said Kausar, who lives in Mumbra in Thane district.

The special investigation team (SIT) probing into the 2004 killings has concluded that college student Ishrat Jahan and her three friends were murdered by the state police in a staged shootout and later passed off as militants.

According to the SITs report,a total of 21 policemen, including four IPS officers then joint commissioner P P Pande, suspended deputy inspector general D G Vanzara, then assistant commissioner G L Singhal and assistant commissioner N K Amin were involved in the staged shootout. They should be hanged till death. Ishrat was the sole bread earner for the family. They took away our life from us, Kausar said.

The news on SIT report prompted local residents to burn crackers and distribute sweets. It is Eid for us. My sister and I wanted to make our mother proud. We studied hard and struggled to run our family. They tainted my sisters image. They called her a terrorist. Finally the truth has been told. My sister will finally rest in peace, said her brother Anwar, who now takes care of the family.

However, the family feels final justice would be done only after the accused are arrested and the court accepts the report.
