New airport alert: IED in perfume bottle

Airport security officials are watching out for passengers carrying perfume bottles following an intelligence alert that warns of a threat from a perfume bottle-based IED. This alert,dated July 20,comes a week after the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai was put on high alert following the serial blasts. It directs all airport operators,aircraft operators and cargo operators to keep a special watch on mail scanners,parcel and x-ray scanners to identify perfume bottles.

According to an input,a perfume bottle-based IED has been devised by Pakistan-based terrorists. Since these bottles are supposed to be sent through couriers as gifts,appropriate counter measures need to be undertaken immediately, the alert message issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India (BCAS) says.

In Mumbai,the CISF has been asking passengers to use their perfume bottles on themselves to prove that the bottles are safe. Officials are keenly implementing an existing advisory that prohibits passengers from carrying perfumes or deodorants exceeding 100 ml. We are checking all passengers carrying perfumes to make it foolproof, an airport official said.

Last month,airports were warned about extremists who could be surgically implanting explosives or explosive components in humans and any animals to conduct terrorist attacks. This prompted the BCAS to instruct officials to watch out for passengers who might be having difficulty in standing,bending,moving or walking. It called attention to passengers showing signs of pain when sneezing or coughing,or having difficulty breathing or showing signs of fever or nausea or other illness. We always keep an eye on passengers behaving abnormally, said a CISF officer.
