Pune can take pride in the recent discovery by National Aeronautics and Space Administrations (NASA) and some eminent scientists of renowned universities of molecules of chemical elements of a planet that is 63 light years away from the Earth as the research, published in the acclaimed science journal Nature, mentions Azam Thatte,a city researcher.

The discovery is significant as this is the first time a telescope situated on Earth has made observations about a planet in the other solar system and as far as 5.96 X 10 lakh crore km from Earth.

According to Thatte,in this new discovery, scientists have found out a way to extract the original light signal of the extra solar planet from the signal distortions caused by Earth. This is a significant achievement, because now we can use all these Earth-based high-resolution telescopes to get much finer details of chemical structures of far-away worlds. This discovery will enable humans to observe events happening in the universe in the light wavelengths that could not be seen through space-based telescopes.

Thatte was instrumental in developing the intelligent signal extraction mathematical algorithm required for the discovery. The algorithm helped explore the original spectrum of the planet HD189733b. With the help of this high-resolution spectrum,it may be possible to explore the existence of life on the planet.

The team of NASA has detected large emissions caused by methane molecules present in the atmosphere. If it can detect methane,it can significantly improve the chances in the quest of life on planets besides earth.

Thatte is currently pursuing his PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology,US. Born and bred in Pune,Thatte did his schooling from the Nutan Marathi Vidyalaya and got his degree in mechanical engineering from Maharashtra Institute of Technology.
