No objection to CBI probe: Maya

UP teen death: Govt suspends ex-SP,promises more action

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday said she had no objection to a CBI inquiry into the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl at a police station in Lakhimpur Kheri but feared the CBI may it mess it up like the Aarushi Talwar case.

If the family of the victim wants a CBI probe,my government has no objection to it. But the CBI may mess it up like the Aarushi murder case, Mayawati said.

The government, meanwhile, suspended D K Rai,who was SP of Lakhimpur at the time of incident and was transferred on Monday for laxity in supervision. Earlier, the government had suspended eleven policemen, including the station officer of Nighasan police station where the incident took place.

Mayawati said she wanted to assure the bereaved family that sternest action would be taken against the guilty. She also asked opposition parties to rise above politics and help the government in catching the culprits in such cases.

Fourteen-year-old Sonam was found hanging in the Nighasan police station campus on Friday. Her family alleged that she was raped and killed by policemen.

The opposition parties and the girls family are dissatisfied with the investigation, which has since been transferred to the CB-CID,and want a CBI inquiry.

The initial post-mortem on the body said Sonam had died due to asphyxia from hanging. A second post-mortem carried out by doctors from Lucknow said the girl was strangled to death. Both post-mortems ruled out rape.

Alleging that the opposition parties were politicising the incident,Mayawati accused previous governments of encouraging mafia and criminals for political reasons and corrupting the government machinery.

The chief minister said her government had inherited a chronic problem and was trying to eliminate it. She said as a result of her efforts, the crime graph in the state had declined.

Accusing the Centre of sending national commissions to UP for political reasons,Mayawati said these panels ignore incidents of crime taking place against women in Delhi. She also said the commissions are never sent to Congress-ruled states.
