Visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Tuesday said his country had no reservations about entering into a civil nuclear agreement with India even as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said he was looking forward to negotiating an agreement with Canada.
“India is a stable and reliable friend of our country. We have no reservations in entering into this kind (civil nuclear) of agreement,” Harper said during a joint press conference, allaying fears about the safety of nuclear installations in India. Singh too assured that India would do everything to safeguard its nuclear installations.
Singh said he looked forward to entering into a civil nuclear agreement with Canada on the lines of those with the US, France and some other countries. The two leaders also underlined the need for intensifying global cooperation to fight terrorism and called for an early conclusion of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism within the UN framework.
The two countries, meanwhile, signed two memoranda of understanding (MoUs) concerning cooperation in the field of energy and a joint study group to examine feasibility of comprehensive economic partnership agreement. The MoUs will enable cooperation in the areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency, oil and natural gas, power generation, transmission, distribution and end-use, energy research and development, a joint statement said.
