Around 65 unions in and around Noida,Dharuhera,Manesar and Gurgaon supporting the ongoing strike at the Maruti Suzuki facility in Manesar, have now decided to undertake a fast on Friday.
Anil Kumar, general secretary,All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) confirmed the development and said that although work at the respective plants of the unions will go on,more than one lakh workers will fast for a day to show solidarity with the workers at Maruti.
We have also decided to conduct a symbolic tools down on June 20 for two hours. Although we had planned it for yesterday, assurances were given to us by the government that a solution will be reached. Since nothing of that sort has been done,we have decided to go on a fast and then stick to tools down, said Kumar.
Meanwhile dialogues between the workers, the government and the company management remained a complete failure even as the strike continued for the 12th day on Wednesday.
We were told about a meeting but it never took place. We are adamant on our demands, Arvind Kumar, secretary of the newly formed Maruti Suzuki Employees Union (MSEU) said.
The Haryana government has been unable to find a solution. A senior official of the district administration said: This is a delicate issue and we are keeping a close eye on every development. We do not want the law and order situation to be worsen as so many workers are on strike and a larger number supporting them.
A recent tripartite meeting too remained inconclusive and Maruti has already made it clear that although the company is open to dialogue, there is no question of reinstating the 11 workers who have been sacked. Meanwhile, the company has planned a plant maintenance shut down for five days beginning June 20.
