With IT-BHU getting the prestigious IIT status, its administration is now setting its sights on an AIIMS tag for BHUs Institute of Medical Science (IMS).
While the Government of India is mooting a plan to establish more AIIMS-like institute in the country,BHU is a strong contender for one of these.
We have already proposed that BHU IMS should be given the status of AIIMS. We are pursuing the matter with the Government of India now, said Prof Lalji Singh,Vice-Chancellor,BHU. We are developing an institute of cancer, and another of stem cell therapy in BHU IMS. We have a full-fledged hospital in the form of Sir Sunder Lal Hospital that caters to patients from Bihar,West Bengal and Orissa. Further,we are also developing a trauma centre with grants from the Government of India, said Singh.
However, like IIT-BHU wants the AIIMS to be linked to the university rather than being autonomous. Because of other institutes like Ayurveda and IIT,inter-disciplinary research can be done at a better pace if AIIMS remained linked to the university, said Singh.
Pursuing for AIIMS status,I also met Special Secretary,Health Ministry,Government of India, earlier. I am also in talks with Ram Kishun,Member of Parliament from Chandauli for the proposal, said Singh.
Coming under the UGC,IMS BHU gets limited grant for running the hospital, which is a major constraint in the hospitals expansion, said Singh.
