Now a water filter at Rs 749 from Tatas

After the Nano people's car, it's affordable and safe water for the masses from the Tata stable. In a bid to provide millions of people affordable access to safe water, Tata Chemicals Ltd has unveiled two variants of water purifiers called 'Swach' on Monday. The two variants, priced at Rs 749 and Rs 999, will hit the local market in another 20 days time.

Speaking at the launch here on Monday, Tata Sons chairman Ratan N Tata said, "Safe drinking water is the most basic of human needs. The social cost of water contamination is already enormous and increases every year. Today, we are happy that we would be able to provide millions more people an affordable access to safe water."

"TCS and Tata Chemicals took up this joint challenge and came out with an affordable purification system for the masses," Tata said.

"We intend to sell this new compact water purifier at an affordable price for the common man in the country. In order to make it easy accessible, we have fixed these two variants at Rs 749 and Rs 999, which will be available by the end of this month. Four other models would also be launched in the next six to 12 months and we have set a target of a million pieces for the first year of launch," Tata Chemicals managing director R Mukundan said.

Tata Chemicals plans to have additional production capacity of up to three million tonnes at different sites across the country in the next five years.

"The company has set up a production unit in Haldia, West Bengal, which has an initial production capacity of one million units per annum. This is opening up a complete new market which will initially see its operation in three states such as Maharashtra, West Bengal and Karnataka. Later, we intend to spread our network across the country," Mukundan said.
