The five-day Commonwealth Youth Leaders Conference ended on Friday after hours of deliberations over the design of a new constitution for the Commonwealth Youth Caucus.
As many as 44 delegates from Commonwealth nations spent the week in Chandigarh learning about leadership and advocacy, covering youth networking, media, community engagement and youth participation in decision-making.
The highlights of the week were the election of new Pan Commonwealth Youth leadership, with Noelyn Wagapu from the Solomon Islands and Rebecca Solomon from Vanuatu being selected as chair and vice-chair,respectively. It is for the first time that elections have been contested with candidates using new media for campaigning. All four regions Africa,Asia,Caribbean and the Pacific too held their regional elections for chair and vice-chairs posts.
Samuel Kavuma,Chair of the Regional Youth Caucus,Africa, and member of the 11-person Eminent Persons Group that is looking into Commonwealth reform, said it was highly significant that young people had been given such an important voice on this platform. He encouraged delegates to offer their recommendations to the panel.
The meeting was organised by the Commonwealth Youth Programme Asia Centre.
