Professor Shoji Shibas phone rang around 1.30 pm on Tuesday,on the last day of his assignment at IIM-Calcutta. The Japanese professor came to know that his mother Shigue had passed away.
On April 5,The Indian Express had reported how 78-year-old Shiba came to IIM-C to finish his teaching assignment despite his house in Tsukuba city having been destroyed by the tsunami and his 100-year-old mother in hospital.
After coming to IIM-C on April 3 to teach Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing Programe (VLMP),he had sought permission from students to carry a cellphone in classroom for news from home.
After coming to know of his mothers death,Shiba told A K Chaudhury,the VLMP co-ordinator,It seems she was fighting with death so that I could complete my assignment here. He requested him not to announce the death until he finished his last class at 8 pm.
After class,the students and faculty came to know about Shibas loss. There was clapping and the students touched his feet. The clapping continued till his car left our campus, said Rudra Prasad Misra,a student. Shiba took a flight back home at 2 am Wednesday.
