Allaying fears of a nervous industry in the context of some recent unfortunate developments,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today laid down economic and social challenges facing the country.
I am aware of the nervousness in some sections of the corporate sector arising out of some recent unfortunate developments. We stand committed to ensuring that our industry moves ahead with confidence and without fear or apprehensions, Singh said while addressing a meeting of a council on industry and trade. The meeting was attended by industry stalwarts,including Ratan Tata,Rahul Bajaj,Azim Premji,Sunil Bharti Mittal,Deepak Parekh,Swati Piramal and Kumar Mangalam Birla.
The Prime Minister said the government is committed to creating a corruption-free environment to ensure the industry moved ahead without fear. There has been uneasiness in the corporate sector regarding the 2G spectrum scam,which saw several corporates being questioned by investigating agencies.
We are considering all measures,including legislative and administrative,to tackle corruption and improve transparency. Comprehensive steps have been taken to strengthen the intelligence and implementing institutions to combat the menace of black money, Singh said adding that a group of ministers has been formed to bring reform in public procurement and introduction of competitive system for use of natural resources. Further,Singh said the government continues on the path of reforms. The economic reforms of the past have brought us advantages and I can assure you that we will continue travelling on this path. We might do it gradually and in a manner which builds a consensus for economic and social change, he said.
