The Pune Municipal Corporation on Monday came under severe criticism from elected representatives in the general body on the implementation of Intelligent Transport System (ITS) across the city. As part of the project, the PMC has installed around 70 cameras across the city a control cum monitoring centre at Swargate.

The MNS raised the issue alleging foul play in implementing the project worth Rs 17 crore. “The PMC has spent the money but there has been no output so far,” said MNS corporator Vasant More. He was supported by his party corporators that carried placards to the general body meeting.

Congress leader Ulhas Bagul criticised the civic administration for wasting public money with no proper planning of execution of the project.

BJP leader Mukta Tilak said the civic body should have made it clear how it was going to execute the project as it involves the city police. “The city police is going to benefit from the project and increase its revenue while the PMC has invested on the infrastructure,” she said.

NCP leader Subhash Jagtap said opposition to the project cannot be justified as it will incuclate discipline among vehicle users. “If there are flaws, they can be corrected but the project cannot be termed failure,” he said.

PMC chief Mahesh Zagade said,“A surveillance system is a necessity as these are safety measures for citizens. It also helps as city faces shortage of police staff.” Around two lakh notices were prepared in a short period from the ITS,he said adding,“It shows the level of traffic indiscipline and it has to be addressed somewhere.”

Resolution passed on reinstatement of suspended employees
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday passed a resolution seeking amendment to the rules that ensures reinstatement of suspended civic employees on 75 per cent of their salary as against 50 per cent given now without seeking their service. Now,the civic body can change the service rules of PMC to enable the accrual of 25 per cent additional salary to the suspended civic staff. The suspended employees were so far given 50 per cent of their basic salary and dearness allowance, and once this goes up to 75 per cent, the PMC may feel it wiser to reinstate those employees who have been suspended for minor charges.
