A joint meeting of representatives of students and teachers of Panjab University was held on Friday at the conference room of the Students’ Centre to discuss the future course of action on the issue of central university status.

The meeting, however, took an ugly turn when PUTA President Manjit Singh and Professor Keshav Malhotra entered into a heated argument.

Sources claim that the altercation broke out due to the alleged divide between PUTA members and faculty members on the matter of central university status.

Speaking to Newsline, Professor Manjit Singh said, “Meetings are held for discussions and they may lead to arguments. PUTA, however, is not divided on the central university issue and we would fight for the same together.”

The students who attended the meeting said they were left with a bad taste in their mouth. While they had been called to join hands to get central status for Panjab University, ‘undecided’ PUTA members provided no motivation.

In the meeting, it was decided to launch an awareness campaign about the advantages if PU is made a central university.

In the month of December, posters, pamphlets and banners would be distributed and displayed to educate students and employees about the issue. Comparative tables and charts would be designed to put in perspective the disadvantages that PU suffers on account of irrational fee structure, lack of grants and aid vis-à-vis other central universities of the country.
