PU students want attendance norms to be relaxed

Demanding relaxation in attendance norms set by Panjab University,students of the Department of Laws went on a strike on Thursday. Students demanded that the recent decision of increasing minimum lectures required for every subject from 33 to 70 per cent be rolled back. They also protested against reducing the chairman’s power to condone lectures from five per cent to ten per cent. Students also demanded that the fee for migrating from regional centres to the university campus,which amounts to more than Rs 40,000,be done away with as it was a discriminatory action. A quota for LLB students for admission to LLM was also sought. The strike was initiated by PUSU members led by Narinder Gujjar and Udey Werring.Meanwhile,the Students’ Council at Panjab University opposed the online attendance system initiated by Vice-Chancellor R C Sobti on Thursday. SOPU president Barinder Dhillon said the council would support the demands raised by students. “If students want that the online attendance system should not be brought into force,we will stand by them,” Dhillon said. The system has already been implemented in various departments.
