The Peoples Union for Civil Liberties strongly criticised on Monday the arrest of a city-based couple,one of them an office-bearer of the organisation,for suspected Maoist links.
Condemning the arrest of Seema Azad,the organising secretary of the outfits UP chapter,and her husband Vishwavijay,PUCL national Vice-President Ravi Kiran Jain said: The manner in which governments are suppressing the voice of those who raise the issue of human rights is a danger to democracy and is giving an indication of a new emergency.
Accusing the authorities of violating the basic rights of the people,Jain said any person raising their voice against such activities of the government is dubbed as Maoist and anti-national.
Three persons the Allahabad couple and a woman from Gorakhpur have been arrested by the Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh police for suspected Maoist links. Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brijlal had said in Lucknow on Sunday that the arrests followed information from various agencies that senior and active members of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) were trying to establish their base in Uttar Pradesh.
