Javed Mozawala,a 28-year-old visa agent from Byculla arrested by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on December 10 for allegedly acting as a spy for Pakistan, had contacted a serving Navy officer in Mumbai and tried to cultivate him as a source. However, the officer refused to entertain Mozawalas attempts at building ties with him, police sources said.
During interrogation,Mozawala said he used to call the officer and ask him for meeting him over a meal, but the officer refused to entertain him. Mozawala had been instructed by his handlers to try and cultivate officials in the defence establishment as sources, and he happened to meet the naval officer while he was returning in a train from one of his visits to Delhi, said a Crime Branch officer, who did not wish to be named.
Seeking his custody, the Crime Branch told the Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Monday that he was found in possession of some documents, including confidential Military Intelligence documents,of sensitive installations from the city. According to the police,Mozawala has not divulged the source of the documents.
Its only now that we have found out that Mozawala was commissioned to hand over these documents to someone else. We would need his custody to track other accused, investigating officer Ajit Sawant told the court. However,Mozawalas lawyer Mubin Solkar argued that the police were merely reiterating the same grounds that they had mentioned during his first production too.
Solkar, who was allowed to privately meet Mozawala in the court, moved an application saying his client had been brutally tortured by the police. However,Mozawala denied this in court. He was remanded in police custody till December 22 by the court.
