Pakistan EC wants a peek into EVMs

The delegation will be visiting India for the concluding ceremony of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the EC.

While a section of the political class in India has voiced concerns over the reliability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs),poll authorities from Pakistan want to have a look at them.

A Pakistani delegation led by Chief Election Commissioner,Hamid Ali Mirza,is learnt to have requested the Indian Election Commission to arrange for a demonstration of the working of the EVMs and a visit to an EVM manufacturing facility. The delegation will be visiting India for the concluding ceremony of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of the EC on January 25.

The EC has agreed to the request. They have expressed a desire for a bilateral meeting. They have also requested for a demonstration of the functioning of EVMs and a visit to a factory manufacturing them, Akshay Rout,ECs Director General of Communications,said.

The EVMs were first used by the EC on experimental basis in 16 Assembly segments of Madhya Pradesh,Delhi,and Delhi in 1998. The machines are manufactured by PSUs Bharat Electronics Ltd,Bangalore,and Electronic Corporation of India Ltd,Hyderabad.

The machines have helped speed up and simplify the election process. However,of late,some politicians,across the political divide,have questioned whether the EVMs indeed were tamper proof.
