Pawar under fire,NCP mouthpiece says not eating sugar won’t kill

An editorial in NCP mouthpiece advised people to 'keep in mind the situation and adjust their habits accordingly.'

With party chief and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar under attack over rising prices, including that of sugar, the NCP has offered a solution — consume less of the sweetener as “no one dies due to not eating sugar”.

In an editorial,NCP mouthpiece Rashtravadi, advising people to “keep in mind the situation and adjust their habits accordingly”,stated: “No one dies due to not eating sugar… by eating items made from sugar, diabetes increases. So,it is not necessary that everyone consume sugar.”

“Doctors say eating excess sugar and salt is akin to poison,” stated Rashtravadi whose managing editor is NCP state chief Madhukar Pichad. “Those with diabetes don’t eat sugar but they still live.”

“The (family) expenditure is on cosmetics, vehicles, fuel, entertainment, hobbies and luxury items, but no one says a word about the rising prices of these items. Why is sugar considered an essential commodity?” it argued.

Pawar and the party were quick to distance themselves from the remarks. “Even what an editor writes in any newspaper is not supposed to be the view of that publication… It doesn’t mean that I accept the views published in Rashtravadi,” Pawar told a party meet in Aurangabad.

NCP spokesman Gurunath Kulkarni said these were Pichad’s views.
