For more than one and a half years, residents of Ashoknagar,Bhosalenagar and adjoining areas falling under the Shivajinagar Telephone Exchange of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL),could not use the landline phones as they went dead after underground cables snapped. The BSNL had then assured that these customers will not have to pay any rent during the ‘dead’ period. However, the officials now insist that they first pay up the ‘outstanding’ rent or else the lines will be disconnected.

Interestingly, many customers, who got their landlines disconnected through application months ago,are still receiving letters from BSNL saying iIf they don’t pay up,the phone will be disconnected.

“In 2008,my BSNL landline phone went dead after the underground cables got snapped in the pavement work. Despite that,I kept receiving letters from the BSNL asking me to pay the rent. However, when I met the BSNL officials, they told me that I don’t need to pay the rent and asked me to neglect the such letters,” Sonal Gujrathi,a resident of Mantri Kishor Park in Ashok Nagar said.

All these areas were recently brought under the Ganeshkhind Telephone Exchange and the BSNL had assured to restart the old numbers again.

“When there was no development on that even after a long wait,we approached the BSNL once again to get my landline reconnected. The officials asked us to first pay the pending rent amount or face disconnection. Though we met senior officials,we did not get any help. So,I am thinking of doing away with the landline phone to avoid any nuisance,” Gujrathi said.

“When we started getting letters from BSNL asking us to pay the rent for our dead phones,we twice applied for disconnection. However,we still get the letters,” said Kiran Mahajan another resident.

A BSNL official from Shivajinagar Exchange said,“If the customers have any complaints, they should come to us.
