The state assembly on Friday witnessed rare political bonhomie in the state when the leaders of the Trinamool Congress and the CPM observed the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Jyoti Basu.
While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee paid floral tributes at the portrait of the former CM at Writers Building, his cabinet colleagues Partha Chatterjee, minister for Commerce and Industries,Shankar Chakrabarty, minister for Jails,Moloy Ghatak, minister for Law and Justice,Speaker Biman Banerjee,Deputy Speaker Sonali Guha, did the same at the Assembly.
From the Opposition those who paid floral tributes to Basus portrait in the Assembly include former Speaker Hasim Abdul Halim, leader of the Opposition Surya Kanta Mishra,CPM chief whip Abdur Rezzaq Mollah among others.
Last year the Trinamool had boycotted the Left-held Jyoti Basu Memorial Lecture describing it a waste of public money. While neither the Chief Minister nor any of her cabinet colleagues said anything after placing the garlands,Speaker Biman Banerjee paid rich tributes to the former CM and said the CPM leader gave importance to the Opposition and kept in touch will all of them. Biman also credited Basu with making CPM a national-level player.
Deputy Speaker Sonali Guha, who represents Satgachia in South 24 Parganas district, the Assembly constituency that saw Basu victorious five times, also heaped praise on Basu saying he was above party politics and used to help all whoever came to him.
Surya Kanta Mishra called Basu a symbol of national integrity adding that introduction of land reforms in the state was his biggest achievements.
