Power shortage continues, officials advise judicious consumption

As the temperature continued on the upward curve on Thursday,Delhi’s power woes remained unabated.

As the temperature continued on the upward curve on Thursday,Delhi’s power woes remained unabated. “This is a throwback to the era when powercuts during the summer months were commonplace. We had grown accustomed to a reduced load-shedding since then, but that seems to have reversed over the last couple of days. On Wednesday night,we had hour-long power cuts four times. Today,we have had three powercuts so far — one was for two hours,” Deepti Trehan,a resident of Janakpuri’s C4,F-Block said.

With the peak hour demand soaring to 3,966 MW and supply drying up due to a dip in hydro-power generation,Delhi’s Power department announced an unprecedented increase by 11 per cent in Delhi’s power consumption since last June. The usual trend is an increase of 4 to 5 percent annually.

“Delay in monsoons, combined with extremely high summertime temperatures,is the biggest reason. We are in touch with the Meteorological department. Looks like we will have to wait till next week for the situation to get better,” a power department official.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit too addressed the issue in the assembly and advised citizens to use electricity judiciously. “We are going all out to ensure we get power from the states that owe us. In the case of hydel plants, however, there is little one can do as there is no water to generate electricity. We are sending out the message to residents that if ever there was a time to take energy conservation seriously,it is now,” the official added.

Delhi also had to experience load-shedding on Thursday due to under-frequency relays, brought about due to excessive overdrawal from the Northern Grid. Delhi is currently facing a shortage of 375 MW. “Certain thermal power stations such as Singrauli have had to shut down a few of their units, leading to the shortage,” the official said.
