Expressing concern over rising prices of essential commodities, the Centre on Thursday blamed some states for poor management that has resulted in shortage of some of these items.

Citing an example of the poor management, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said in the Lok Sabha, "...in one state I found, because of overgrowth of potato production, they could not buy it, there were not adequate storing facility, it was simply dumped on the street."

Intervening on a discussion on price rise of essential items, Mukherjee said when prices of potatoes increase, when prices of vegetables increase, blame cannot be squarely put on Union Finance Minister or Union Agriculture Minister. "Surely, it is bad management (of some states)," he said.

He said, "We are deeply concerned. When the prices go high, when the people suffer, when essential commodities are not available, definitely people will not feel happy, they will feel angry, they will feel frustrated, that will get reflected in the voices of representatives of the people."

The Finance Minister's remarks assume importance as food inflation has crossed 15 per cent to stand at 15.58 during the second week of this month. Prices of potatoes, in fact, more than doubled in one year.

The Finance Minister sought states' cooperation to deal with the situation, there is still a huge gap between what farmers get and prices in the market. "If we do it collectively together we will be able to deliver good," he said.

As long as...By: Roy | 28-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward the right wing supporters keep blaming all & many of their woes on the Union Government there will be no change. Compare a Madhya Pradesh or for that matter Gujarat...compare them with the worst ruled Congress state of Maharashtra...overall the latter is comparatively easier to live in...manage within means. Now do not bark right whingers...check out the living index.
Price Rise and Pranab.By: P.H.Bhanage | 27-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Does he mean states other than ruled by his clique. This fellow is good for nothing except blaming others for everything that goes wrong.Who is ruling Maharashtra? Why prices are reaching the skies in the state of Agriculture Minister,"Krishitajdnya" Sharadaji Pawar? Here again he and his ruling clique are not responsible. The people are responsible .The prices rise only because people consume. If people stop consuming there won't be price rise.Stupid people do not understand that.Instead of managing his portfolio he can be seen more on the Cricket field, where cheer leaders are dancing. He is no doubt a sensible person. He is there where is money.
politicians looting the common manBy: Ravi | 26-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward when politicians and businessmen collude with each other to loot the maximum in addition to the corruption that is practiced it is only the common man who suffers and silently bears the brunt. what else can he do? if. only r.k. laxman had drawn a cartoon today how it would have been?
Blame Games Played by Politicians By: Veliyam Sasi | 26-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Mr Minister, the common man is equally concerned to know that our great economists are also clueless in containing the price rise and now playing blame games. Now we understand that nobody can save us from this back breaking price rise.
