Any plan by the Delhi government to increase power tariffs in the city is likely to be met with stiff opposition by the Residents Welfare Associations (RWAs),who plan to adopt a new strategy and a common action plan this year. The issue will be taken up at a series of public hearings that will start on Sunday at the office of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission in Malviya Nagar.
Rajiv Kakria, chairman of the GK -I RWA said that the focus this time will be on ensuring that the hearings are not only for namesake.
About three weeks ago we got together RWAs from across Delhi and decided to file common petitions. We have been fighting them for years now with emotional arguments, but this time we decided to put together a set of detailed complaints that will really expose what these power companies are doing, he said.
RWAs plan to argue against tariff hike on legal and technical grounds.
We will go in as teams and we have chosen specific people to tackle individual issues. The idea is that when one of us is speaking others can assist so that we make sure our points come across, Kakria said, explaining the action plan adopted by the RWAs.
Some of the issues expected to be raised include: abolition of fixed charges, installation of alleged faulty meters and the reason why the NDMC area of the Capital gets power at substantially cheaper rates than the rest of the city.
Delhis demand for power has reached unprecedented heights this year, but Kakria says that several residents have found that they were paying substantially increased rates despite the power companies not adding any new appliances to their homes.
