Purulia arms drop was RAW op to destabilise Left govt, say accused

The operation was masterminded by some people in the Narasimha Rao government, they said.

The main accused in the 1995 Purulia arms drop case —Kim Davy and Peter Bleach—have claimed the mysterious operation was masterminded by some people in the then Narasimha Rao government.

Speaking to Times Now on Thursday,Davy and Bleach claimed the arms drop was aimed at destabilising the Left Front government in Bengal “so that President’s rule could be declared and the CPM government disposed of”,and that British spy agency MI5 and India’s external spy agency RAW were involved in it.

“Of course there were Indians involved…there had been for years MPs who had seen atrocities committed against the people of Purulia and 24 MPs had signed the petition to the President to intervene to try to protect these people; nothing happened, and finally the Central government saw and approved plans to arm the defence of these innocent people,” Davy said.

Indian security agencies had arrested an Englishman and five Latvian airmen shortly after the airdrop but Davy had “managed to escape”. Davy claimed he was smuggled out of India to Nepal by an MP.

Davy said he was revealing all this now because he feared he might be extradited to India,so wanted to reveal the truth and set the record straight.

Reacting to the report, sources in the government claimed Davy was doing this to stall his extradition that has been approved by the government of Denmark.

A senior official dismissed Davy’s claim about the involvement of RAW,saying had this been the case, the Indian government would not have been seeking his extradition for the last 15 years.

CPM finds new poll plank

One of the main accused in the 1995 Purulia case,Kim Davy’s claim that the arms drop was aimed at destabilising the then West Bengal government has come as boon to the CPM,desperate to ward off the anti-incumbency mood in a poll-bound state.

An upbeat party lost no time in making it an election issue, saying that a conspiracy has been going on for a very long time to destabilise the Communist government.

Immediately after Kim Davy’s interview to Times Now,Biman Bose,CPM state secretary, called a press conference at the party headquarters on Alimuddin Street. He tried to establish the fact that various forces had been active to topple the Marxist government and the efforts were still going on in full swing.

“We have been saying for a long time that both domestic and foreign forces are active to oust the Left Front government. The efforts have not abated,on the contrary they have become more fierce,” Bose said.
