Heavy rain may have washed away crucial forensic evidence related to the bomb blast outside the Delhi High Court, the police suspect.
Though vital samples were collected from the spot where the blast took place and a crater was formed, the area around it was being scoured for samples when it started raining heavily. We immediately put up a tarpaulin structure to secure the blast site and majority of the samples had been lifted till the rain came. Some traces must have fallen a distance away. Chances are these might have been lost, said a senior police officer.
On Thursday, sky lifts were roped in by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to scour for evidence on trees above the blast site. The sky lift was sourced from the Delhi Fire Brigade and NIA officials pulled down torn clothes and other samples from it. The police said the impact of the explosion was so strong that the clothes of the victims were found hanging in trees at a considerable height.
The police said all the 74 injured and the 13 dead have been accounted for and the chances of the suspect being among them has so far been ruled out. The police said they have checked the antecedents of all the people who were taken to hospital and all of them had valid reasons to be present there at the time of the blast. On Thursday,NIA Director General S C Sinha met Police Commissioner B K Gupta.
The NIA team sourced the bomb disposal squad, draftsman (who draws map of the site) and sniffer dogs from Delhi Police. Two years after its creation, the NIA is still not logistically equipped and depends on police for minimal requirements. The police said they were sharing all details with the NIA and assisting it in the probe.
