Caught between its party chief Raj Thackeray’s friendship with Sachin Tendulkar and the national outrage over Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray’s outbursts against the cricket icon, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has preferred to remain diplomatically silent on the controversy.

A day after Bal Thackeray was condemned by leaders across the nation for his open letter published in the Sena mouthpiece Saamna, slamming Sachin for saying that Mumbai belonged to all, the MNS did not make any comment either in support of Thackeray or Sachin.

“No one from our party will comment on the issue as the letter has been written by Balasaheb. It is their issue, we do not want to comment over it,” said a senior MNS leader.

Though the MNS has commented over editorials published in Saamna in the past, this time, the party is keeping away from the contentious issue. “The editorials and statements by Sena leaders are commented upon, but we have never commented on anything said by Balasaheb,” the MNS leader added.

MNS leaders also said that since Tendulkar was a celebrated Marathi icon and a close friend of Raj Thackeray, the party did not want to add to the controversy. In October 2007, Sachin Tendulkar had attended an inaugural function of ‘Maharashtra Dharm’ organised by Raj at Shivaji Park where he read out his father Prof Ramesh Tendulkar’s poem ‘Prajakt’.

Meanwhile, Sena cadres stood by their party chief on Tuesday. “Balasaheb has been talking in an upfront manner for over 40 decades. Moreover, Sachin is not India,” said a Sena leader, adding that the MNS, which was aggressively snapping at the heels of the Shiv Sena, had not reacted to Tendulkar’s comments despite Raj’s earlier attacks on actress and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Jaya Bachchan and SP MLA Abu Azmi for making such statements.

Sachin: Friend Raj, furious nation keep MNS quietBy: N.V.SANKARAN | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward I think the remarks by Bal Thakeray was part of the game of one-upmanship being played by Bal and Raj Thakeray. Though I do not support the actions of the Thakerays, we can see some kind of chauvinism in all parts of the country, though not as explicitly. About two months back, I had read a news which said that 90% of government jobs in Orissa would be reserved for ethnic Orias. Few days back, the Kerala chief minister said that all government employees should know Malayalam. In Bangalore, you experience step-motherly treatment from even the traffic policemen towards non-Kannada speaking people. If Malayalies are not being so explicit as the Thakerays, it is because successive governments of the Kerala state have created such a situation that Malayalies in large number had to migrate to other parts of the country and even outside the country. Had there been enough employment opportunities in Kerala, some Thakeray would have started fight for Kearala for Keralites.
DeoBy: Shankar | 20-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Bal and Raj are worthless crap. They are not statesmen and are not even recognised outside Mumbai, in the rest of the country as men of any standing, political or otherwise. They function like local mafia and use religion, caste factor and muscle power to secure their area of influence for making money. People should shum them and not support them at all
Beware Marathi BrothersBy: Vikas Kumar | 19-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward My dear Marathis, wake up . Don't use Goondas like Raj Thackeray and Bal Thackerey for your selfish needs. RAJ THACKERAY of the MNS and Bal Thackeray of the Shiv Sena are like the Talibans, who were once used by Americans and have now become their biggest enemies. In the same way, if Marathis support MNS and Shiv Sena, one day they will mean trouble for all Marathi families. I want to ask one question. Why do we Indians go to foreign countries like USA and Australia? They should also treat us the same way we treat people from Bihar and UP. Suppose if something bad happens to Mumbai and Delhi like the Pakistanis dropping bombs there, will you not come to Bihar for shelter, if it%u2019s a safer place. We should condemn the Central government and the state governments for not developing all the states of India equally.
sachin is indiaBy: friendguy | 18-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Sachin is more of India than Thakrey is of Mumbai. What have they ever done for the land they live in except making provocative useless speeches.
