Sajjan incited mob to target Sikhs in 84 riots: CBI to court

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday contended before a Delhi court that senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar had incited the mob during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots to target the Sikh community in Sultanpuri area of Delhi.

In the court of Additional Sessions Judge Sunita Gupta,the CBI alleged that Kumars speech was so provocative that it prompted the mob to attack Sikhs and consequently very few Sikhs persons were left alive in the area.

Kumar delivered an address inciting the mob to target Sikhs. He was leading in a jeep and others followed him on motorcycles. Only Sikhs and their households were targeted,while no Hindu house suffered mob fury, CBI counsel D P Singh told the court.

Singh charged Kumar,a former MP,with a criminal conspiracy for whatever happened in the locality of Sultanpuri,including the death of eight persons in the riots that followed the assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on October 31,1984.

Singh also read out the statements of several prosecution witnesses to strengthen his arguments.

The witnesses have maintained a consistent stand and blamed Kumar for the incidents,said Singh. The argument stretched to over an hour and a half and Kumars counsel kept making interjections all through. The defence counsel has sought time till Saturday to begin arguments on framing of charges.
