The cane growers across Uttar Pradesh have been agitating against the State Advisory Price of sugarcane procurement, which has been pegged by the government at Rs 160-Rs 170 per quintal,an effective hike of Rs 25 per quintal.
Meanwhile, the BJP said it would bring an adjournment motion in the winter session of the Parliament against the Centres new cane pricing policy. Ajit Singhs RLD has also threatened to disrupt the proceedings in the Parliament till the issue is resolved.
Through an ordinance, the Centre has replaced the earlier system of fixing the Statutory Minimum Price (SMP) by Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of Rs 129.84 a quintal. If any state chooses to give a higher price than FRP,the burden has to be borne by it unlike in the past when mills were mandated to pay the same.
